One of my favorite scriptures in the Bible is found in Mark Chapter 4. It is the story of the Mustard seed. Most people when they think of the Mustard Seed story only tend to think about the story Jesus told in Matthew Chapter 17 about how much faith we need to accomplish things. (See Matthew 17:20) But this story is a little different in Mark Chapter 4, Jesus is referring to the kingdom of God and the potential that we possess already as children of God.. This scripture absolutely changed my life. My prayer is that you have ears to hear what Jesus is teaching us in this passage.
Mark 4:30-32 (NASB)
“And He said, “How shall we picture the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we present it? It is like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that the birds of the air can nest under its shade.”
I love the teachings of Jesus Christ. He is definitely the Master Teacher. What I find interesting about this passage is the fact of how something so small can eventually grow into something so great. A mustard seed according to Jesus is a very small seed compared to other garden plants. But sometimes looks can be deceiving. Don’t look at the kingdom of God within you as a light thing. It may seem small and insignificant compared to everything else in the world. Just because something is small does not mean that it can not become powerful. I want to encourage you today, don’t look at your present circumstances but rather remember what has been planted in you by Jesus Christ. You have unlimited potential on the inside of you. It is time to release the power from within.
“Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”
You have received the kingdom of God within you and it can never be moved. It is alive and active in you. How do I get this seed in me to grow you may ask? Mustard seeds grow in the right soil in the right conditions. The mustard seed goes from being a seed to becoming a tree with many branches through growth and time. Growth comes through hearing and obeying the word of God. It comes through experience of walking with the Lord. It comes with obtaining wisdom and knowledge from the Holy Spirit in your life. It also comes through with a steady diet of the word of God and exercising what you hear. I can see the great potential you have as a child of God. Maybe you feel it too. Look below at the picture and see what became of the small seed you saw earlier. It became a beautiful tree fulfilling its purpose in life. It is time for you to flourish in the kingdom of God and be like the tree below. It is time to bring forth fruit!! I want to leave you this thought, “seed never looks like what it will become.”
