As a Christian, we are no longer under the law but we are now under the beauty of grace. Grace is God’s unmerited favor bestowed upon us as children of God. It is free and unmerited. We could not earn a right standing with God on our own merits. It was given to us freely by God and now with this new position of righteousness, how does this favor work on our behalf in our everyday lives? (See Romans 6:14) (Ephesians 2:8)
I was reading the book of Proverbs and I think this passage of scripture will help us to answer this question.
Proverbs 3:1-4 (NASB)
“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments. For length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Do not let kindness and truth leave you. Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.”
Now this scripture was written in the Old Testament but let us not throw the baby out with the bath water because we live under a New Covenant. The Old Testament was written for our learning so that we would be fully equipped to live this life out as God intended. We can learn from the stories in it so we can have faith to defeat giants and do the impossible. (See Romans 15:4) (See 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
What I found interesting was that God would give man favor as they would act kind and deal with truth in their everyday lives. Many people in society use situational ethics. But shouldn’t we as Christians be kind to others and tell the truth? God is watching our everyday interactions and I believe with all of my heart, He is looking to show himself strong on behalf of those who operate in integrity and the law of kindness. Look for opportunities to be extremely kind to others and always no matter what tell the truth. (See 2 Chronicles 16:9)
Think about it this way. Here is a good quote from Pastor Joel Osteen from Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas that I like:
Wouldn’t you like to experience this type of favor? I know I do. Obey the scriptures and you will be blessed in your deeds because God is not a liar. If he said it in Proverbs, then it is still true today. Get ready for the next level in your life by preparing today to help others and being truthful.
